Welcome to The Rookie Retiree.
Rookie Retiree is about life after work — not pensions, investments, or financial planning. It explores what happens to your identity, purpose, relationships, and routine when work is no longer a central part of your life.
Whether you’re counting down to retirement, finding your feet in the early months, or several years into the journey, you’re very welcome here.
Life Beyond the 9-to-5
When people talk about retirement, the conversation usually centres around money.
Retirement isn’t just a financial event; it’s a total life design. It’s about answering a deceptively simple question:
“What do I want this next chapter of my life to look like?”
I’m Phil Marsh, Creator of Rookie Retiree. When I stopped working, I found endless advice on pensions, but far less about what to do when the meetings stop, the diary clears, and your world suddenly opens up.
This blog is my ongoing exploration of that transition.
I write candidly about my own experiences, lessons learned, and occasional missteps — while sharing real stories from other retirees to highlight the many different ways that people use to navigate life after work.
My hope is that you’ll find ideas, perspectives and encouragement that help you make the most of yours. (If you’d like to get these updates straight to your inbox as I publish them, you can join our community here).
After all, retirement doesn’t have to mean accepting a smaller world. In many ways, it offers the freedom — and the luxury of choice — to create a bigger one.
About Phil
Phil Marsh is the creator of Rookie Retiree, a blog exploring life after work — the good things, the not-so-good things and everything in between. Rather than focusing on pensions and personal finance, Rookie Retiree looks at retirement as a total life redesign, centred around purpose, fulfilment, relationships, travel, spending, connection and what happens next.
Phil believes that retirement offers the luxury of time and choice. The challenge is deciding what to do with it.
Start With What Matters to You
One of the first things I’ve learned is that retirement rarely unfolds exactly as expected. If there’s a retirement guidebook, somebody forgot to send me a copy.
Some people arrive here before retirement, wondering what life beyond work might look like. Others are newly retired and finding their feet. And some have been retired for years but are discovering that retirement, like life itself, continues to evolve.
Retirement isn’t a destination. It’s more like a series of detours, discoveries and occasional U-turns.
What retirement does offer is the luxury of choice — how we spend our time, who we spend it with, what we learn, where we go and how we contribute.
And because there is no one right way to ‘do’ retirement, there can be no single definition of success.
So rather than following a prescribed path, start with whatever interests, challenges or inspires you most.
